Bangladés, Pakistán e India son los que peores resultados obtienen superando en más de 10 veces los máximos de concentración anual de PM₂,₅ fijados por la Organización Mundial de la Salud Solo 7 de los 127 países del mundo analizados en el estudio llevado a cabo por la compañía suiza de IQAir cumplieron en 2023 con los nuevos límites de seguridad establecidos por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en 2021 . Estos nuevos límites actualizan las guías de calidad del aire y concretamente la presencia de partículas en suspensión de menos de 2,5 micras de diámetro (conocidas como PM₂,₅), un tipo de partículas vinculadas en parte a los combustibles fósiles y que están relacionadas con alrededor de un millón de muertes prematuras cada año en el mundo. Que tan solo un 5% de los estados estudiados cumplan ahora con estas nuevas directrices es preoucupante , puesto que la actualización de los varemos se ha realizado debido a la revisión de la literatura cinetífica existente sobre las afecciones a la salud de la contaminación. Este estudio demuestra el gran reto que tienen que afrontar las naciones para asegurarse de que sus ciudadanos no estén expuestos a un aire inseguro.
